അന്നവസ്ത്രാദി മുട്ടാതെ
തന്നു രക്ഷിച്ചു ഞങ്ങളെ

To understand the
meaning, let us split this mantRam into five sets of words. The first set is
(annavastRAdi - അന്നവസ്ത്രാദി) which could be
split into annam (അന്നം) and vastRAm (വസ്ത്രം). The next word is Adi (ആദി); meaning things like them (‘food and cloths and
things like them). The second set or word is muTTAthe (മുട്ടാതെ), which means without stop
or as we need or constantly avoiding any scarcity of it. Next third set of
words are thannu raKSHichhu
njangaLe (തന്നു രക്ഷിച്ചു ഞങ്ങളെ). In this the first word is thannu (തന്നു); meaning by ‘giving’ or ‘providing
us with’. With that ‘giving’ HE is also protecting us. That is the next word (raKSHichhu
- രക്ഷിച്ചു). With that ‘protection’, HE is also saving and
fostering (njangaLe - ഞങ്ങളെ), us. With fourth set of word/words, He
is also making us wealthy and worthy (DhannyarAkkunna - ധന്യരാക്കുന്ന). He makes us fortunate to be able to
maintain a respectable life. With the fifth
set of words, “nEyonnu-Thane njangaLkku thampurAn” (നീ ഒന്നു തന്നെ ഞങ്ങൾക്കു് തമ്പുരാൻ), Gurudevan is instructing us that we must be grateful
and dedicate our life to the service of the Lord by saying “nEyonnu-Thane
njangaLkku thampurAn” (നീ ഒന്നു തന്നെ ഞങ്ങൾക്കു്
തമ്പുരാൻ), meaning; You (നീ), the One (ഒന്നു), alone (തന്നെ); (who is doing all these for us); You
alone are thus our LORD (thampurAn - തമ്പുരാൻ). The word njangaLkku – (ഞങ്ങൾക്കു്), means ‘for us’.
Now my translation of
the third mantRam is as follows.
Providing us with
food and
clothing, as we need; You enriches our lives; thus You alone are the
LORD for us.
We may feel that this mantRam in some way limits its scope to two worldly
needs as jeevAthman, i.e. food and clothes for us. We may also feel ‘Is
this the writings of the author of AdmopadeShaShathakam and darSHanAmala!’ Lots of people may wonder why an ascetic of the
caliber of Gurudevan, gave such an importance to food and clothing. Let us take
a closer look into this.
